Yesterday, in the wake of Rosanne Barr’s somewhat off-color tweets, ABC announced the cancellation of her popular sitcom “Rosanne.”

What is astounding is the number of conservatives who think this was a conservative show.  In point of fact, you would be hard pressed to find a more liberal sitcom on TV.  The “Rosanne” show weekly promoted very liberal and progressive ideas.  For example…

  • The show promoted a gender-questioning/nonconforming 9-year-old boy as normal and cute (episodes 1, 2, & 6)
  • The show routinely bemoaned the lack of affordable health care (episode 3, 8, & 9)
  • The show actively promoted unionized labor as preferable to non-union labor (episode 9)
  • The show made light of sexual promiscuity and sexual diseases (episode 5)
  • The show presented foreign immigrants on welfare as acceptable, and demonized those who think otherwise (episode 7)
  • The show promoted Federal funding as the solution to the problems of the working class (episode 9)

In fact, if you watched the 9 episodes that aired, the only “conservative” concepts you can find are:

  • The main character did not vote for Hillary Clinton (episode 1)
  • The main character remained in a committed, married relationship for 45 years (episode 8)

The fact that many “conservatives” find this show to be “conservative” is disturbing. John Nolte, Editor-at-Large of Breitbart News, said “we finally got one over on Hollywood’s blacklist against conservatives and conservative ideas, we finally had a top-rated TV show that took our ideas seriously, a monster hit, a cultural game changer…”

Does Nolte honestly believe this tripe?  “Rosanne” took conservative ideas seriously? That ridiculous statement demonstrates how desperate conservatives are for television entertainment that supports their beliefs.  All it took was for the main character to vote for Trump, and all the progressive philosophy the show actively promoted is simply ignored.

The “Rosanne” show was not conservative.  The “Rosanne” show was dangerous.  And John Nolte’s comments are a perfect example of why it was dangerous.  Like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, the show was slipping into conservative circles and making progressive principles acceptable through laughter.

Another show did this once.  In 1998 the show “Will & Grace” began to make deviant sexual behavior acceptable.  It did this by presenting an openly gay character as a funny, cute clown.  The show was wildly popular for 8 years and won 16 Emmy Awards.  It made people laugh and as a result, paved the way for homosexuality to move from the realm of perversion to normalcy.  Through its wild popularity, especially among conservatives, “Rosanne” threatened to do the very same thing for many progressive ideas.

On behalf of all conservatives, I want to say “thank you” to Bob Iger.  Although he doesn’t realize it, ABC did the conservative movement a huge favor by cancelling the “Rosanne” show.
