Dear Meghan,
It would be laughable, if it wasn’t so sad, that you honestly think that “No one will ever love [Trump] the way they loved” your father. Let’s review the facts….
Your father ran for president in 2008 against an inexperienced, liberal, freshman Senator from Illinois. In what became one of the most spectacular election defeats in history, your father gathered 59,948,323 actual votes, and only 173 electoral votes. His opponent, a relatively unknown and unintelligent community organizer gathered 69,498,516 votes and 365 electoral votes.
Do you understand what this means? In 2016, Hillary Clinton, who was considered one of the most unlikeable candidates in Presidential history, was able to gather 227 electoral votes. Even Mitt Romney, another generally unlikeable person, was able to garner 206 electoral votes against your father’s same opponent.
To find someone who was more universally NOT LOVED by the American people, you have to go back to Bob Dole, who only got 159 electoral votes, but at least he was running against an incumbent that actually WAS generally loved by the American people.
In fact, to find someone who was not running against an incumbent that got less electoral votes than your father, you have to go back to 1988 when Michael Dukakis ran against George H.W. Bush. But even then, Bush was running as the third term of Ronald Regan. So really, you have to back to 1952 when Adlai Stevenson picked up 89 electoral votes. And once again, he was running against a popular WW2 hero! (And unlike your dad, he ACTUALLY was a hero!)
So, I guess the country “loved your father” slightly more than they loved Adlai Stevenson, which is to say, not very much.
Now, let’s look at Donald Trump. He received 46.1% of the vote compared to your father’s 45.7%. Sounds like more love to me.
But here is the kicker….after 2 years of constant attacks from the media, the opposition party, and even those from his own party, his supporters have been unwavering, loyal, and consistent. Even though he has not accomplished some of his major promises, he still boasts a 43% approval rating….and it really doesn’t move. His supporters love him…more than anyone ever loved your father.
In fact, as recently as the end of 2018, your father was listed as #5 on the list of the “10 LEAST liked Senators.” His own party wouldn’t even name a building after him because, well, they really didn’t like him very much.
So, please stop peddling this fiction that people loved your father more than they will ever love Donald Trump. They didn’t. They don’t. They won’t. They never will.
